An awareness drive has been planned on May 1 on the Phillaur bridge by concerned residents to encourage people to not pollute the Sutlej river. RBS Roots,an NGO working on this project, plans to raise awareness in a bid to stop people from throwing plastic bags, glasses and other articles in the river. The project has been named ‘Panj Paani’.

Dr Amandeep Singh Bains, project coordinator, said: “More than 40 volunteers will be raising awareness to not pollute the river. Our survey indicates that more than 250 polythene bags are thrown in the river on a daily basis, besides other items like coconuts, flowers and eatables.”

The volunteers will be wearing identical clothes to get themselves noticed. Bains added: “Our team will take plastic items from the commuters and will only allow the disposal of biodegradable items in the river. Concerning industrial pollution,we can only request the pollution board to be swift in their approach.” Industrial effluents from the industry operations on the Jalandhar bypass are adding heavy metals in the river water because of which many villages along the Sutlej are under the grip of hepatitis and various skin disorders.

Currently, the project only exists in Ludhiana, but, the NGO plans to take it to other parts of the state.
