To cope with the rising water demand during the peak summer season, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has decided to operate tubewells as and when there is power rather than only during the fixed schedules. This has been done as the city is on the verge of a water crisis in the wake of the long powercuts being imposed by PSEB.
The Operation and Maintenance Cell has been receiving complaints from across the city even as residents are up in arms. The residents of LIG flats in Dugri Phase-1 protested against MC authorities on Monday complaining they have not received proper water supply for the last many days.
According to MC authorities, tubewells will now operate from 4 am to 8 am as the powercuts start after that and are also imposed late in the afternoon. The evening schedule for water supply has been fixed from 7 pm to 11 pm.
The tubewell operators, meanwhile, have been instructed that in case of any change in the schedule of powercuts, they should operate the tubewells whenever power is available so that people do not suffer.
The city has more than 750 tubewells and submersible pumps but since they dont have a backup generator set,the water supply is directly affected in case of a powercut.
MC authorities have also asked PSEB to inform them about any change in the powercut schedule well in advance so that they can instruct the tubewell operators. PSEB has also been requested not to change the schedule too frequently.
Also, supervisors have been deputed to check if tubewell operators are adhering to the instructions. The supervisor and tubewell operator concerned will be dealt with strictly in case of a complaint, revealed instructions issued by the Operation and Maintenance Cell of the civic body.
