Semester system to continue for time being, says education minister

Sewa Singh Sekhwan, stated that the semester system will continue till the time the cabinet approves the scrapping proposal.

Though teaching associations and Punjab State Education Advisory Board have suggested to scrap the semester system, the Education Minister,Sewa Singh Sekhwan, stated on Thursday that the semester system will continue till the time the cabinet approves the scrapping proposal. Sekhwan was in GGN Khalsa college where he was honoured by the college management.

He said,“Even if the cabinet gives the nod,it will come in force from the coming session,so the same system will go on in the current financial year.”

As per the semester system,PSEB conducts board exams for Class X and XII every semester. Board has to employ manpower and follow many formalities twice a year for both classes which used to be an annual affair earlier. Teaching associations had stated that since continuous evaluation of students’ performance takes place, board exams should be conducted only once a year and the rest should be made internal assessments.

Sekhwan said that the Education policy and Library Act will also be discussed in the coming cabinet meeting for approval. He announced that a school in folk singer,Kuldeep Manak’s,village will be named after him. This was done after the demand by Gurbhajan Gill,President of Punjabi Sahit Academy.
