Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University authorities have taken strong exception to the irresponsible attitude and uncalled for strike by students,which they have been pursuing to prevent the establishment of a new veterinary polytechnic at Kalajharani,Bathinda,for training of para-veterinary staff.

Dean Dr Simrat Sagar Singh said the government of Punjab envisages to initiate the development of para-veterinary staff in a scientific manner. Availability of well-trained para-veterinary staff is of utmost importance for holistic development of livestock sector in Punjab. Students resistance to this move is,therefore,totally uncalled for, he said.

Singh further said,The role and responsibility of veterinarians in the present era have changed. The veterinary doctors have a vast domain,which covers specialised diagnostic procedures,imaging techniques,surgical procedures,feeding,housing and production systems and so on. The competition between qualified veterinarians and veterinary pharmacists is absolutely a non-issue.

The university authorities have repeatedly advised students to resume classes and appealed in writing to their parents. Instead,the students have threatened to intensify their agitation and lock up the institution. This attitude will be highly detrimental for teaching,research and extension activities of the university,apart from being inconveniet for farmers and pet owners. The university,therefore,appeals to parents to desist their wards from striking activities and urge them to resume classes immediately,failing which,the university will be constrained to take strict action,including suspension of semester, added Singh.
