1 held for posing as cop,looting senior citizen

The DN Nagar police have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly posing as a police officer and looting a senior citizen of his chain and ring in Versova on Friday.

The DN Nagar police have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly posing as a police officer and looting a senior citizen of his chain and ring in Versova on Friday.

The police are on the lookout for two more men who were along with the arrested suspects.

In the past four months,the police from zones 9,10 and 11 have made more than 51 cases where citizens were duped of their money and jewellery by fake policemen.

The fake policeman identified as Gulam Hasan Sameer Shaikh (35) was nabbed by the DN Nagar police officers patrolling on the Versova link road in the morning.

V D Bhoite,senior inspector at D N Nagar police station said the victim Hasmukh Shah (70) was on a morning walk when the three intercepted him near HDFC Bank,introducing themselves as policemen.

The trio told Shah to be alert as thefts had increased in the area and hide the gold ornaments he wore on his body.

“The accused had also told the victim senior police officers wants to meet him,” said Bhoite.

Believing the three,the victim was removing his ornaments following which the three began running,when the two patrolling police officers found their movements suspicious,they approached them.

“Seeing the police officers approaching them,the three started running faster to evade arrest,” Bhoite said.

The police officers chased the three for more than a kilometre and nabbed Shaikh while the other two managed to flee with the booty.

“Shaikh has been arrested for cheating and impersonation. He will be presented before the court on Saturday,” said Bhoite.
