2 cadaver donations in a day, total 172 this year in Mumbai

In the second case, a 53-year-old man passed away in Hinduja hospital due to brainstem death. His family agreed to donate his liver and both kidneys.

The city witnessed two organ donations on Thursday at the government-run Sion hospital and the private Hinduja hospital, taking the total number of cadaver organ transplants this year to 172. This is the third organ donation at a government hospital this year. Two previous donations were from JJ hospital, indicating the gradually active role government hospitals are taking in counselling families of brain-dead patients in donating organs.

On Thursday, a 34-year-old man was declared brain-dead at Sion hospital following which his family agreed to donate his heart, liver and both kidneys. The heart was sent to Fortis hospital and liver to KEM hospital. While one kidney was sent to Hinduja hospital, the second was used for a transplantation in Sion hospital for a wait-listed patient.

In the second case, a 53-year-old man passed away in Hinduja hospital due to brainstem death. His family agreed to donate his liver and both kidneys. According to the Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Centre, one kidney was transplanted into a patient at Hinduja hospital and the second kidney and liver were allotted to Global hospital.

In September alone, six cadaver donations have been recorded in Mumbai. Since January, the city has recorded 56 kidney transplants, 40 liver, 32 heart and one lung transplant through 43 donors.
