2 public hospitals may get DSA machines this fiscal

A DSA machine is a radiological equipment used for screening blood vessels in the body and costs around Rs 7 crore.

Dr Suleman Merchant,head of the radiology department at Sion hospital,said it was an essential machine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. “These machines can be used for stroke patients,poly-trauma cases and for arterial stenosis,” he said.

Currently,only two civic hospitals in the city,KEM and Sion,have DSA machines. While the one in Sion has been defunct for the last three years,the second in KEM has already crossed its life-expectancy period.

This is the second time that BMC has issued a tender for DSA. The first tender,issued before July this year,was called off since only one bidder came forward. Doctors working in the radiological department said delay in procuring DSA machines has forced patients to opt for far more expensive private hospitals.

“The machine installation needs certain room specifications,which took us some time after which we listed our requirement,” said Dr Hemant Deshmukh,head of radiology department at KEM Hospital.
