The prosecution in the 26/11 trial expects to conclude its case on Wednesday against Ajmal Kasab, arrested for the attack, and alleged conspirators Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin Ahmed.
Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said today that all but two witnesses,ACP (Crime) Deven Bharti and ACP Ashok Duraphe, have deposed. Therefore,we will most probably conclude our evidence tomorrow, he said. Bharti had given sanction for some charges against the accused, while Duraphe is the chief investigating officer.
The prosecution today examined senior police inspector (Crime Branch Unit 1) Ramesh Mahale, who had supervised the investigation and paperwork for the chargesheet. Mahale explained how he carried forward the investigations under the supervision of his seniors.
Mahale, witness number 277 for the prosecution, told the court that on November 27 last year, authorities had transferred 12 offences from local police stations to the Crime Branch. Chosen by his seniors to lead the investigations,Mahale appointed 12 officers.
Mahale informed the court that he had forwarded several proposals for sanction under various acts and sent materials to the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory. He said he had also produced Kasab personally before the Chief Metropolitian Magistrate to record his confession.
