The probe into the acid attack on aspiring army nurse Preeti Rathi at Bandra Terminus on May 2 has been transferred to Government Railway Police (GRP) Crime Branch.

The probe into the acid attack on aspiring army nurse Preeti Rathi at Bandra Terminus on May 2 has been transferred to Government Railway Police (GRP) Crime Branch. The case was being so far investigated by Bandra GRP. Delhi resident Preeti (25) was seriously injured when a masked man hurled acid at her soon after she alighted from Garib Rath at Bandra Terminus. She was to join Army Medical College in Colaba the same day.

“The crime branch was conducting a parallel investigation, but the case was handed over to it Friday. We have also written to Mumbai Police Crime Branch for help,” said Vijay Dhopavkar, senior inspector,Bandra GRP.

Police have so far made one arrest and are likely to send a team to Delhi for further investigation.

Final-year BTech student from Haryana Pawankumar Gahalon (24) was arrested from his Rohtak home on May 8. He was brought to Mumbai the following day and is currently in judicial custody. Police are studying call detail records of family and friends of Preeti.

Her father Amarsingh hoped GRP Crime Branch would be able arrest the accused. He had written to CM,home minister,DGP and Mumbai Police Commissioner last week demanding the probe be transferred to CBI. He said he did not have faith in Bandra GRP.

“I am confident the crime branch will conduct a better and faster investigation,” Amarsingh said. Meanwhile, doctors at Bombay Hospital unsuccessfully tried to examine chest and stomach of Preeti Saturday.

“Doctors attempted a bronchoscopy and upper gastroscopy Saturday afternoon but it was not successful because of the strictures in her respiratory pipe. Her condition remains critical and further treatment will be decided by Ashok Kumar Gupta, the plastic surgeon treating Preeti,” said a spokesperson for Bombay Hospital.
