Aman Balgu, after having retained the All-India Railways mens title for the second year recently, was confident personified while upsetting top seeded Noel Pinto in straight games to bag the mens singles title in the JVPGC-Amit Rathi Memorial All Mumbai Ranking table tennis tournament hosted by Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana.
Aman, who was seeded third, hardly set a foot wrong right through the tournament,as he virtually made short work of all his rivals before routing Noel 11-3,14-12,11-8,11-4 for the coveted top prize.
However,Noel had the consolation of winning the youth boys singles title, having earlier beaten Rhys Albuquerque 12-14,11-1,11-5,12-10,11-7. For Noel, who relishes rallies, found Amans speed and power too hot to handle. But for the second game, which went to extra points,it was Aman all the way.
Anay Dave and Shubham Ambre were the two of the most active players on view. Ambre played some sizzling forehand drives and showed tremendous control to go 3-1 up and it looked like curtains for Anay.
But then Anay, after getting a pep talk from his coach Gurcharan Singh Gill, fought back tellingly to turn the tables on Shubham with a 7-11,7-11,12-10,3-11,11-9,11-2,11-4 win. However, the womens and youth girls singles finals proved quite a drab affair with Charvi Kawle running away with a double, beating Joanne DSouza in both the finals with consummate ease.

Akshan captures U-12 title
If there’s one young shuttler who has been making marked progress over the last year or so at the school-level and caught everyone’s eye along the way then it definitely has to be Akshan Shetty. And he continued to make sterling progress by winning the sub-junior boys’ singles title in the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) Inter School Badminton Tournament held at the North India Association courts in King’s Circle,Matunga.
The Thakur Vidyamandir school student from Kandivili, who is coached by Mandar Ranade, was incisive from the start and ended up demolishing Varun Majumdar of Bandra’s Arya Vidyamandir despite trailing early on in the opening game. Shetty fought back in earnest to level the scores and thereafter crushed his opponent 21-11,21-7 in marauding fashion to seal the deal.
To his credit,Majumdar did run away to an early lead but seemed to be fighting a losing battle once Shetty took over the lead. In other categories, favourites Harsheel Dane from CNN,Vile Parle won the boys’ under-16 trophy, while Sanjana Santosh and Sai Dinesh Reddy lifted the girls’ under-16 and boys’ under-14 titles respectively. Dane got the better of Kaushal Dharmamer from Poddar,Santacruz and Sanjana thrashed Ahilya Harjani in the girls’ final. Anokhi Haria, meanwhile, was no match for Reddy and lost in straight games.
