Another chain-snatching,day after RR assurance

A day after Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil told the state Legislative Council that efforts to curb chain snatching in the city were being taken,two unidentified men on a motorcycle robbed a woman of her gold chain on Thursday.

Police say the victim,Kavita Bhalekar (55),was with her husband when the incident took place at Ghatla in Govandi.

“The victim and her husband was at the bus stop near Ashirwad Hospital,when two unidentified persons on a motorcycle arrived. The person who was riding the pillion snatched Kavita’s chain and drove from the spot,” the officer said. Kavita approached the police,who have registered a case against the duo.

“We have registered a case and are probing the matter. Kavita told us the person who was riding pillion is in the 25-30 years age group. We are also working on his sketch,” he said.

According to official figures,jewellery worth more than Rs 26.8 crore were robbed in over 7,020 chain snatching incidents in the city between 2008 and February 2012. Of the cases registered,the Mumbai Police have cracked 2,894 and recovered jewellery worth Rs 6.04 crore. Police have arrested 3,494 in connection with these cases.
