On Wednesday, the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor and struck terrorist infrastructure at nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in response to the Pahalgam attack on April 22 that killed 26 civilians. The nine locations targeted included the Jaish-e-Mohammad’s stronghold in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s base in Muridke.
Indian officials said on Wednesday that Operation Sindoor “was launched by Indian armed forces to deliver justice to the victims of terror attack and their families. Nine terrorist camps were targeted and successfully destroyed”.
The strikes resulted in a sharp escalation in cross-border shelling by Pakistani forces, which left at least nine civilians dead and 38 injured in Jammu and Kashmir, according to officials.
They also impacted air travel as flight operations at various Indian airports, particularly those close to the India-Pakistan border or in the vicinity of key Indian Air Force bases, were affected due to the developing situation. Flights were cancelled at several airports in the country, including Delhi, where more than 20 flights were cancelled and several others were delayed.
Meanwhile, all schools and anganwadi centres in the border districts of Ferozepur, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot in Punjab stayed shut on Wednesday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of children and staff in border areas.
