Rahul Shewale, chairman of Standing Committee and Shiv Sena corporator, said,“It will be turned into an olympic size swimming pool with extra space for additional sports activities, gymnasium and parking. Renovation is expected to complete within a year.”

The pool, named after General Arunkumar Vaidya, has been shut since four years and will be revamped at the cost of Rs 12 crore. A budget provision of Rs 9 crore was made in this year’s budget.

“The pool will also have a filtration plant to keep the water quality as per the set guidelines,” said Shewale. While the funds for reconstruction of the Chembur swimming pool has been increased substantially, the reconstruction of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool in Dadar has still not been completed and it continues to remain shut for the public. Meanwhile, with the BMC’s only functional swimming pool in Ghatkopar, the Lions Swimming pool, was shut last week as the hi-technology ozone filtration plant failed for the third time in the past six months. At present, none of the three BMC-run swimming pools at Dadar,Chembur and Kandivali are open to the public, while the ones at Andheri,Goregaon,Mulund have been given to private trusts to be run.
