Minister for Water Supply and Sanitation Laxman Dhobale has blamed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for not taking adequate measures to prevent the supply of yellow water to parts of the city.
Dhobale said the situation could have been averted if the water supply and sanitation department of the BMC had taken necessary precautions.
From the information I have gathered over the last week,if they had taken proper precautions and measures, such a situation would not have arisen, said Dhobale.
He added that with the ongoing work on the Middle Vaitarna Dam,water has been diverted from Upper Vaitarna to the Modak Sagar Dam. Apart from the usual 300 cusec water flow daily from Upper Vaitarna, now an additional 500 cusec is being released, claimed Dhobale. The additional water flow also required more chemicals for purification of the water before it is supplied. This has not been arranged properly, claimed Dhobale, adding that he was visiting Vaitarna and Modak Sagar on Wednesday to take stock of the cause of the yellow water.
Asked why the state government machinery was stepping in BMCs management of water supply in the city,Dhobale said the move was not politically motivated.
Over the last three days, the BMC has claimed that the yellow water does not pose any concerns to health of citizens.
