After a corporator from Chembur alleged the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) had poisoned trees outside its campus in Anushaktinagar, the BARC has now said it plants several thousand tress annually in its campus, which testifies its love for nature. In a reply to Newsline, the BARC has also said that it is not in a position to investigate the matter since the trees lie beyond its jurisdiction.
BARC plants more than 4,000 trees every year within its campus and the ambience of the campus is a testimony of our love for nature and trees, said T S Verma, head of the floriculture and landscaping section at BARC in his reply.
Over 10 trees, which were located outside the BARC campus, were dying and loosing foliage following which they were subsequently cut down. Rahul Shewale,a corporator from Chembur and also Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations (BMC) standing committee chairman, had alleged that BARC had poisoned the trees. He had written to the Municipal Commissioner asking him to investigate the issue. Subsequently, the BMC had ordered a probe into the matter. Authorities are investigating whether any chemical or poisonous substance was used to kill them.
We have come to know of destruction of twelve trees and allegation of poisoning of the trees by BARC through newspaper reports and no direct communication has been received by us in this matter. BARC is in no position to investigate the matter since these trees lie outside the boundary of BARC and beyond our jurisdiction, said the BARC letter.
