In an effort to increase the voting percentage above the national average and to help voters reach polling booths on the voting day, a colour coding scheme will be implemented in the city, said Rajendra Kshirsagar, Collector, Mumbai Suburban on Monday.
According to officials, the process of filing nominations for the four constituencies in the suburban district is slated to begin on April 26.
Speaking to reporters, Kshirsagar said, “To ensure convenience of voters, we will be implementing colour coding at the locations where there will be more than five polling centres in the same locality. Voters will be given voter slips of a particular colour indicating a particular polling centre which will help them access their booth easily. There will be 573 such polling centres where this initiative will be implemented.”
For the convenience of the differently-abled and voters in the age group of 85 years and above, the election office has enabled the option of home voting. Kshirsagar said they will also be ferrying BEST buses for the ease of commuting for differently-abled and senior citizens on the polling day.
According to officials, there are a total 74 lakh voters under Mumbai Suburban Lok Sabha constituencies out of which 39 lakh are female voters, 34 lakh are male and as many as 812 are transgender voters.
“Proper shades, sufficient drinking water facility and seating arrangements will be available at polling centres,” added Kshirsagar.
Meanwhile, following the launch of the nomination process, the nomination papers can be submitted till May 3, with the scrutiny of the nominations slated to commence on May 4.
For the record, April 23 is the last day for enrolment of name in voter’s list. The collector’s office has appealed to voters to enrol their name in the voter’s list and exercise their franchise on polling day.
