Cops: domestic strife may have led AI engineer to take own life

Police have also learnt that the relationship between Bhattacharya and his wife was strained after her return from Kolkata after delivering a child in the beginning of the year.

“Sejwati had gone to her parents’ house in West Bengal in February for the delivery of her daughter and came back a few days later than the original schedule. This had caused an argument between Bhattacharya and his wife. The relationship between them became strained leading to frequent quarrels. Moreover,Sejwati has told in her statement that Bhattacharya was short-tempered and would often get angry,” said Kharade.

Sejwati,who was pursuing her M.Phil,also wanted to work instead of being a housewife. But Bhattacharya was against it as their daughter was too young. On Monday,the couple was supposed to wake up early to pack as they were supposed to go to Goa the next day. However,Sejwati woke late in the morning because of which they could not pack. This sparked off argument between them. Later,Sejawati went out with her daughter and maid for some work and on returning found Bhattacharya’s body hanging from the ceiling.

In his suicide note,Bhattacharya had written that nobody should be held responsible for his death. His parents came to Mumbai late Monday evening and his body was taken to Kolkata for the last rites.
