In a preventive policing measure to ensure safety of women and children, all 93 police stations in the city have drawn up a list of known ‘sexual predators’ in their respective areas of jurisdictions.
The persons on such lists will be closely monitored by the police.
However, despite the occurrence of the two Shakti Mills gangrape cases within the jurisdiction of the N M Joshi Marg police last year, the police station has not listed a single sexual predator from there, Newsline has learnt.
Police stations have compiled the list on the basis of criminal records of serial offenders in rape and molestation cases. According to officers, Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria had issued instructions to police stations in this regard in March.
Instructions have also been issued not to make the list public or display them as a rogue’s gallery on the police station’s notice board. Each police station will be held accountable for monitoring the sexual predators on their list.
The N M Joshi Marg police station, however, has claimed that none of the repeat sexual offenders in rape and molestation cases fall in their jurisdiction. “The list was to be made on the basis of repeat offenders. The police station has stated that none of the repeat offenders are in the area under their jurisdiction,” said Mahesh Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Mumbai Police spokesperson.
“The names on the list, which are with senior officers of all the 93 police stations, have been identified on the basis of complaints and FIRs. As per the guidelines, those accused in ‘technical’ cases such as promise of marriage not being fulfilled, are not part of this sexual predators list,” added Patil.
“The final inclusion of the sexual predators’ list was to be supervised by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the zone, and the additional commissioner of police in charge of the region. In this zone, a total of 25 persons have been included in the offenders list,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5)
