The family of a mass media student who was allegedly raped by a senior student had first approached the college authorities demanding action against the boy, said the police. It was only when the college did not take immediate action, the victim approached the police, three days after the incident.
According to the victims statement,on July 21 evening, she and accused Pankaj Mishra had met near Mishras house in Chembur and he had taken her home to help her with a project. After working on the project for a few hours, she got up to leave but Mishra refused to let her go. She resisted, grabbed a knife and threatened to cut her wirsts if he did not let her go. Mishra then pacified her and when the girl calmed down,he took away the knife and allegedly raped her and let her go the next morning, said a police official.
According to the girls statement to the police, she informed her family about the incident and they approached the college authorities first demanding action against the boy.
Its possible that the parents didnt want the matter to come out in the open. They wanted to sort it out without police intervention. However, when the college did not take any immediate action, the victim and the family lodged a police complaint, said an official.
The police are now searching for independent witnesses who may have seen the accused and the victim together on the day of the incident.
They will also be recording the statements of the college authorities and neighbours of the accused. The police are verifying the girls statements and are waiting for her medical reports.
