The Mumbai Police have decided not to ban mobile phones inside the Wankhede stadium during the World Cup matches.
With the threat of the city being in the radar of terrorists, the police were contemplating banning spectators from carrying mobile phones into the stadium during the matches, including the finals slated in Mumbai.
The issue came up for discussion during a series of meetings held between city police and the match organisers. Assistant Commissioner of Police (protection and security) Madhukar Pandey said the police department was considering ban of mobile phones inside Wankhede stadium during the matches.
According to Sanjeev Dayal,Mumbai Police Commissioner, the police thought about it and decided to leave it to the ICC committee. This was just a possibility, but we have decided not to impose the ban because it will be difficult for the police to implement it, said Dayal. The ICC will issue an advisory to the spectators before the match, he added.
Apart from the city police,State Reserve Police Force personnel and quick response teams will also be deployed in and around the stadium.
On March 13 and 18,New Zealand will play against Canada and Sri Lanka respectively, while the final would be played on April 2. We will take all security measures possible in and around the stadium to ensure the safety of players and spectators, Dayal said.
