Crime Branch wants I-T probe into bookies’ assets

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch will now write to the Income Tax department asking them to look into the assets of bookies arrested when the police had busted an IPL betting racket on May 17.

Crime Branch sources revealed that the police were also likely to call the producer of Gali Gali Chor Hai for routine questioning after one of the film’s co-producers had been named by the arrested accused.

Crime Branch sleuths had last week carried out a raid in Kandivali and busted a major cricket betting racket operating from the area. According to Crime Branch officers,two major bookies,identified as Sonu Jalan and Devendra Kothari,were arrested in the raid along with four others. Officers said that the arrested were accepting bets on the ongoing Indian Premier League matches.

short article insert Officers revealed that they had learnt that Jalan and Kothari had allegedly provided incorrect income tax returns and had not revealed their actual occupations. “Jalan and Kothari have not revealed their actual occupation on their income tax returns and have also filed minuscule returns. While Jalan wrote that he had an automobile spare-parts shop on his income tax returns,Kothari wrote that he had rented out his commercial property. Both of them have showed meagre amounts as their earnings,” said a Crime Branch officer,who did not wish to be named. Investigations later revealed that Jalan had an Audi car among other high-end cars.

“Besides cars,he has a lavishly done house at Kandivali. Kothari has properties in Rajasthan and Mumbai. We are now writing to the Income Tax Department so that they can investigate the allegations of the duo paying less income tax and also assess their properties. The letter will be sent to the Income Tax Department soon,” the officer said.

Police said,if there is any proof of a hawala racket,then the Enforcement Directorate will take over the investigations. Officers said that the alleged involvement of Gali Gali Shor Hai co-producer,Prakash Chandnani,was being probed into. “We are also investigating mastermind Sunil Abhichandani,alias Sunil Dubai’s role. Police have issued look out circulars against Chandnani and Abhichandani,” an officer said.
