The polices new,state-of-the-art cyber crime laboratory on the Bandra-Kurla Complex will be inaugurated by the beginning of December, the launch having been held up because of the need to focus on US President Barack Obamas visit.
All our attention was focused on security arrangements and other initiatives had to take a back seat. Also we wanted the Home Minister to inaugurate the new cyber lab. Since there was a reshuffle in the state government,we had to wait till the post was decided. Now,the cyber lab will soon be launched, said Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal.
The dedicated cyber crime police station at BKC and the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) at the Mumbai Police headquarters will also be upgraded and relaunched at the same time. With hardware and software keep rapidly evolving, the existing resources had become outdated, prompting the upgrades.
The new cyber lab will finally give the police the resources to handle sophisticated cyber crime forensics independently. So far, they had relied on other agencies and laboratories for forensic evidence that could be used in court.
The existing cyber crime laboratory at Worli is being shifted to the cyber crime police station.
The police have tied up with partners in the IT sector to launch a forum called CopTech, part of an effort to keep pace with changing trends in cyber crime.
