Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, from January 20 to 24. The visit is significant as Fadnavis will interact with global investors to promote Maharashtra as the most-favoured destination for business in India.
In his first tenure as Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis had thrice attended the WEF at Davos. The state’s industrial ranking moved up to first from fifth during his first tenure (2014-2019).
Initiatives such as ‘Magnetic Maharashtra’ and ‘Make In India’ had taken place during the period. Along with Fadnavis, Industries Minister Uday Samant, MMRDA, MIDC and CIDCO officials will be part of the delegation to Davos.
According to CMO, MoUs will be signed in data centre, automobile, semiconductor, EV, electronics, steel, food processing, textiles, medical and infrastructure sector projects.
Maharashtra has set the ambitious target of $1 trillion economy by 2028.
The emphasis is on global investments to boost key sectors through mega projects which would also help generate employment. All these initiatives are part of the commitment towards holistic growth and development of Maharashtra.
“Maharashtra has always been the most favoured destination for both domestic and global investors. Our purpose is to enhance the global investment keeping larger goal of making Maharashtra a trillion-dollar economy and creating employment prospects,” Devendra Fadnavis said.
While pushing development model, utmost care had been taken to ensure regional balance. The growth and development will not restrict to any one region. On the contrary, backward regions will get equal opportunities, he said.
In November 2024, the BJP-led Mahayuti government came to power with landslide victory. In this backdrop, the challenges before Fadnavis to deliver results in terms of economic growth and tackling employment have multiplied.
With a five year-term till 2029, Fadnavis, who is heading a coalition government, reckons economic development is integral for overall socio-political balance and progress in Maharashtra.
After completing his first term in 2019, Fadnavis was vying for a second term. In 2019, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena broke ties with BJP. It went for alliance with Congress and NCP to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. Thackeray became the chief minister, however, two-and-half years later, the government was dislodged by BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra.
The political instability in the past five years with change of governments coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic for two years affected the state economic plan to some extent, a senior officer said.
