As gents once again disrupted work at the Tardeo RTO (Central) on Wednesday protesting against the governments scheme of delivering motor driving licences to applicants residences, the state transport department has revealed that of 2,000 driving licences and car registration smart cards sent to applicants residences until now, only 35 licences have been returned undelivered, indicating that the scheme has been largely successful.
We have got a good response to this scheme and only 2 per cent of the total licences remained undelivered. Problems have been sorted out after talking to the postal department. The applicants of the undelivered licences and smart cards will be asked to produce the correct address, failing which they will not be issued licences, said state Transport Commissioner Dilip Jadhav. The scheme, which was implemented in the Tardeo (Central) RTO,will be extended to Wadala (East),Andheri (West) and Thane from May 1.
On Wednesday, the agents created ruckus by stopping work at the Tardeo office, one of the busiest RTOs in the city and the state, that led to decline in revenue. Earlier, the Tardeo office used to record daily revenue of Rs 1 crore, but for the past few days, the revenue has been recorded in lakhs. Around 70-80 taxis paid taxes daily, but this has gone down to 10, said U S Alsi,Deputy Transport Commissioner. The number of applications for driving licences, have come down.
According to Madhukar Jadhav,RTO (Central) Tardeo, the agents were opposing the new scheme of the transport department under which the driving licences were to be posted at applicants residences.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had started the scheme early this month. RTO officials said in earlier process there were chances of many forging the papers by giving fake addresses while procuring licences. The new process was meant to end this malpractice and bring in more transparency as the licence would directly reach the applicants house. In case there was any problem with the address, the licence would be returned to the respective RTO and the applicant will not be issued one.
We feel that the process is lengthy and the card reaches applicants after a long time. The government should make the process optional and people should be allowed the collect the licences from the offices, said Sayyad Hussain,an agent working at the Tardeo office.
We deliver passports and we have been doing it without any complaints from the Ministry of External Affairs. There is also enough manpower as we recruited 1,500 people three months ago, said Abha Singh,Director,Postal Services (Maharashtra and Goa).
