Fitting Return

Abraham and Thakore return to Mumbai with a collection for the urban woman.

Designer duo David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore’s love for minimalistic patterns and extensive use of handwoven fabric has been well documented in each of their collections in the last 20 years, both on and off the runway. The Delhi-based designers are all set to return to Mumbai with the launch of their latest

Autumn-Winter collection at Atosa, housed in a quaint bungalow in Khar.

“We have based the collection on the structure of the fabric and have used a lot of geometric motifs such as lines and blocks,” says Abraham, the creative director of Abraham & Thakore (A&T). The collection is dominated by dresses, tunics, tops and trousers, and acknowledges the needs of the urban Indian woman. After the closure of A&T’s store at Colaba’s Courtyard more than a year ago,the designers limited their presence in the city to a few select designer stores such as Ensemble.

However, this absence has not caused an impediment to their understanding of Mumbai’s market. Keeping in mind the humid and sultry Mumbai weather, the designers have made use of lightweight fabrics such as cotton and silk in their clothes. “When we were at Courtyard,we observed that November-December usually becomes cool. This is also the time when foreign tourists frequent the city,” says Thakore.

The Autumn-Winter collection makes use of handwoven styles such as ikat and Maheshwar and,at the same time, stays true to the duo’s signature style of minimalistic and modern cuts. The colour palette shows muted autumn colours including ivory, black, white and pastels. The Autumn-Winter collection ranges between Rs 3,000 and Rs 35,000 and has an extensive variety of accessories such as scarves. A&T is in the process of launching an e-commerce site, which would go live by next month.
