The Barfiwala Flyover was constructed in 2008 and initially originated from Juhu, connecting with the north-south arms of the old Gokhale Bridge. (File Photo)The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has submitted its final report regarding Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge’s final alignment with the CD Barfiwala Flyover in Andheri.
This comes three weeks after the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) submitted its first technical report to the civic body on March 19. In its report, VJTI had said that the two flyovers can be merged without demolishing either of them. The VJTI report also said the two structures can be aligned by raising four spans, however, the IIT report mentioned that while the entire bridge doesn’t need to be demolished, it can be merged by raising two spans instead of four.
“The alignment works will be completed within 90 days and we are aiming to achieve it by June end or first week of July. VJTI will prepare the blueprints immediately, after which the alignment work will be taken up. The total cost of alignment would be around Rs 8 crore,” said an official.
Civic officials also maintained that girders on the northern side of the bridge were being brought to Mumbai from an Ambala workshop and the assembling process will begin after April 2022.
The Barfiwala Flyover was constructed in 2008 and initially originated from Juhu, connecting with the north-south arms of the old Gokhale Bridge. The latter was demolished in 2022 and a new bridge was constructed in its place, which was opened to the public on February 26 this year.
However due to Railways guidelines, since this bridge passes above the railway tracks, the BMC constructed the new Gokhale Bridge at an elevated height of six metres, resulting in its arms with the Barfiwala Flyover getting misaligned.
