Two days after the theft of 78 bullets from the Guwahati Express, the Government Railway Police formed teams and sent their personnel to different places including Guwahati on Monday to investigate the incident.
An escort party of the 6 Assam Regiment was on its way to (Khadki) Pune Ordnance Factory for getting 78 bullets of AK-47 and SLR rifles and other ammunition tested.
The bullets were packed in sealed boxes and kept in luggage compartments.
At Bhusawal station, the team found that the seal had been tampered, but did not investigate it. But they discovered the theft after the train arrived at the Kurla terminus.
The theft must have occurred before the train reached Bhusawal (near Nashik) as they discovered the tampering of the seal there, said ACP Bapu Thombre,GRP. The team would be going to Guwahati. The Army and Railway Protection Force (RPF) are separately investigating the case.
Railway officials said the incident could have been averted,if the escort party had been vigilant.
