‘Father non-committal about minor rape victim’s custody’
BY: ROHIT ALOK
A day after a 20-year-old plumber was arrested by the Wadala TT police for allegedly raping his younger sister repeatedly over the past two years, the victim’s future hangs in limbo. The police said her father had been non-committal on whether he would take her custody and she was at present at the juvenile shelter home in Dongri.
The accused, who used to stay with his two younger sisters and a younger brother in Sangam Nagar, Wadala, was arrested on Tuesday after the victim brought her prolonged exploitation to the attention of her teacher. Child Welfare Committee had conducted an awareness programme in her school, which reportedly gave her the courage to break her silence.
“The victim’s father is coming to Mumbai from their native place, where he owns and tends to their farms. He has not yet confirmed whether he would take her custody. He is expected to reach the city on Thursday,” said Senior Police Inspector Suhas Garud, Wadala TT police station. The police also said during interrogation the accused told the police that he only raped the victim and never his other sister.
“The accused also said he only committed the offense whenever he was under the influence of drugs,” Garud said. The accused worked as a plumber, and also used to collect the rent from the tenants residing in the two houses that his family owns in the same area, while the other three are still studying. The children’s mother left them five years ago. The accused has been charged for rape under the Indian Penal Code as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
