Services on Harbour and Transharbour lines were delayed Tuesday due to the failure of an overhead equipment at Chembur and a protest at Belapur.
Twenty-two services on Harbour line were cancelled between 1.51 pm and 3.35 pm after the overhead equipment of a Panvel-CST local malfunctioned.
Earlier in the day,a Panvel-CST local was stopped at Belapur from 1.38 pm to 2 pm and another at Seawoods from 1.50 pm to 2 pm by NCP leader and MP Sanjeev Naik and his supporters to protest poor maintenance of railway stations.
A railway official said CIDCO,which is incharge of 15 railway stations, had stopped maintenance as the agency wanted to hand over the responsibility to Central Railway.
Commuters pay between Rs 1 and Rs 4 as surcharge to CIDCO on a second-class ticket and between Rs 2 and Rs 6 to travel to stations in Navi Mumbai.
Atul Rane, chief public relations officer,Central Railway, said,The process of handover has started. We have agreed to take over maintenance in due course. Revenue sources such as advertisements and parking lots will also be taken over.
