‘If Pak does not mend ways, Modi should press N-button’

Difficult to trust Pak, but we have confidence in Modi’s leadership, says Thackeray.

Uddhav Thackeray. Uddhav Thackeray.

A day before the arrival of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shiv Sena issued a statement that described Pakistan with an expletive and said should it remain crooked, “Modi should press the nuclear button”.

In the statement issued in Marathi late on Sunday night, Thackeray said:  “At this moment, we don’t want to protest against Pakistan. This is not the occasion. But it is difficult to trust Pakistan. But we have confidence in Modi’s leadership.”

He, however, confirmed that he would attend Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in Delhi “along with all my newly elected 18 MPs”.
Sena is also expecting to join the Modi government. Thackeray said: “We are extremely happy to see Modi becoming the PM. It is being said good days are here. But the good days does not mean just food and climate. It should also extend to larger security concerns, terrorism and ill-treatment meted out to Indians by Pakistan.” He added: “We expect Modi to adopt a tough stand against Pakistan if it don’t mend its ways.”

The Sena chief said Modi’s decision to extend invitation to Pakistan for the swearing-in ceremony was part of the exercise undertaken to engage all neighbours was justified and his party did not have any reason to come in the way of Modi’s celebrations. Stating that Sena was not opposed to the Pakistan PM coming to India, Thackeray said: “Our concern is their betrayal. They beheaded our soldiers. They subjected our citizens like Sarabjit to torture. What are they doing to stop terrorism and infiltration? These are the concerns, which cannot be tolerated silently.”

He added: “There was never any ambiguity about Sena’s participation in the function. Some mischief makers were trying to give an impression that Sena might not attend Modi’s function.”
The BJP leadership both at the centre and the state was a little worried following reports of AIADMK’s protest after Modi extended invitation to Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksa. During his visit to Delhi for NDA meeting, Thackeray had indicated that he was of the view that Pakistan should not be invited for the swearing-in ceremony.
