‘Isolated spells of rainfall over next few days’

With no significant weather system to bring in rain to the city as of now, only occasional showers in some parts will be witnessed in the next three to four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.

“Last week, our area did not experience a significant weather system due to which there wasn’t much rain in the city. This situation is still persisting,” said VK Rajeev, director,IMD.

From Friday morning to Monday evening, while Colaba received 21.1 mm rain,Santacruz received only 2.5 mm. The only good rainfall day last week was Thursday with Colaba receiving 22.6 mm rainfall and Santacruz receiving 41.4 mm. The city has largely been dry post the first week of August.

“This is not unusual and is characteristic of monsoon. We’ll have to wait for another weather system to form. Until then, there will be a few spells here and there in the city, for the next three to four days,” he said.

The city has remained dry for the most part in August, with Colaba receiving only 250.1 mm rainfall and Santacruz receiving 199.6 mm in three weeks, with a little over a week to go for the month to end. This is lower than the Colaba average of 529 mm and Santacruz average of 678 mm,for the years from 2004 to 2010.

“The monsoon season must be looked at in totality. Monsoon is from June to September, but it doesn’t rain equally every month. Like this year,July was the wet month but it is not always so. Sometimes it is June or August. It depends on when the favourable weather systems form. The performance of the monsoon is still good,” Rajeev added.
