It’s in the details

For couturier Azeem Khan,it’s not just the clothes that maketh a woman. Whether you’re dressed in your evening best or your casuals for a Sunday brunch, the right add-ons are a must.

Couturier Azeem Khan on why women will love his new accessory collection

For couturier Azeem Khan,it’s not just the clothes that maketh a woman. Whether you’re dressed in your evening best or your casuals for a Sunday brunch, the right add-ons are a must. Accessorising correctly,Khan says, can lift an outfit to a new level of perfection. “Even if you get the clothes right, you need to know how to make yourself stand out. If a woman accessorises correctly, she’s sure to make heads turn,” says the Mumbai-based designer.

Khan is launching his first accessory collection today at his Colaba store and with it,he’s launching a new concept in fashion. “I’m launching an embroidered accessory collection which includes a whole range of pieces from bibs and hip-huggers to earrings and clutches, featuring embellishments with crystals and coloured glass.” But he clarifies that designing accessories is not something he’s only just started. “I’ve been designing for my wife and some friends for some time. I’ve also helped out many of my clients — if they feel that they don’t have the right accessories for the clothes I create for them,I also design the appropriate accessories.” The collection’s high point is not just that it’s trendy and beautiful — it is also affordable. “You don’t always have to buy a strand of pearls or giant diamonds and emeralds to look good. If you want something pretty that offers value for money, then my accessories will suit your purpose.”

The designer is known for his uber luxurious designs and love for elaborate techniques. After toying with a career in medicine (“I realised that cutting up frogs was not something I could do”) and architecture (“I guess,I don’t have the obsession with details which the career requires”),Khan ended up in the family business of textile and clothing. But he says it was fated. “I’ve always loved to dress women. As soon as I close my eyes,my mind starts coming up with newer and better ways of designing for women. I think it’s because they’re so beautiful and graceful — it’s such a pleasure to dress them up.”

Unlike his brother Naeem Khan, who’s the current toast of the international fashion circuit,Khan has no plans of packing off to foreign shores. “I’m doing so well here, why would I want to give it all up? And anyway,it’s silly to consider leaving India when the market here is booming,” he says.

Khan counts US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and supermodel Naomi Campbell among his elite clientele, but the one lady he would love to see wearing his accessories is Gauri Khan. He explains,“She wears the most beautiful clothes, but she hardly accessorises. If she picked the right pieces, then she would look impeccable.”
