The chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced to set up a full-fledged University to impart an integrated skill development training in specialised sectors in Maharashtra. The Skill Development University purpose would be to generate trained workers based on the requirements in multiple sectors that would boost both industries, agriculture, hospitality and service sectors. It would also incorporate community courses.
The chief minister’s ambitious project promising employment to 5 lakh youths every year is aimed at bridging the gap between trained manpower requirement in various industrial and service sectors. The total registered unemployed youths are 35 lakhs in state.
According to a detailed survey total requirement of skilled workers in nine critical sectors works to 5.46 crore.

According to Fadnavis, “The government has two pronged policy to facilitate infrastructure to ensure skilled workers and also growth in industries and service sectors. There is a huge mismatch between the industrial requirements in multiple sectors and unemployed youths.”
The chief minister revealed, “A comprehensive study undertaken by the government revealed there is a requirement for 5.46 crore skilled
man/women power in various sectors across Maharashtra.” The sector wise requirement is Construction (8 lakhs), Manufacturing (34 lakhs), Textile (250 lakhs), Automobiles (55 lakhs), Hospitality (2 lakhs), Health (3lakhs), Organised Retail (173 lakhs), IT/ ITCS (16 lakh), Agriculture (5 lakhs).
The chief minister, who holds the portfolio of skill development department said, “My endeavor is to integrate human resources with
industries, service sectors and state growth.” The Skill Development University will provide a platform for the youths not only to take
specialised training but also help them to channelise their knowledge in jobs accordingly.”
Citing an example he said, “Even after completing engineering courses youths are still looking for the jobs. Under the integrated project
management we would provide platform to ensure the human resources are absorbed in the required job sectors.”
While lamenting that previous government had overlooked this aspect of matching human resources with market requirements, he said, “In 2010, skill council of state chaired by chief minister (Congress) was set up. It remained on paper. There was not a single meeting convened to unravel the plans and policies.” Whereas, after becoming chief minister, I held a meeting of skill council in the first month.
