A man who had got bail in an assault case is back in jail, this time for forging the documents he had used for applying for the bail. The forgery was detected when the documents were sent for verification.
Forty-year-old Alangir Sheikh had secured bail after producing documents purportedly signed by a Bhiwandi tehsildar. It was later learnt that the tehsildar had not signed the documents.
The Kurla police arrested Sheikh along with another person,Suresh Mali, who had stood guarantor to Sheikh.
Last year,Shivajinagar police arrested Sheikh in an assault case and he had applied for bail. He attached the documents shown to have been attested by a tehsildar from Bhiwandi. The documents served as a solvency certificate and he secured bail. When the court sent the documents to the tehsildar for verification,he wrote back saying he had not signed it. Around a month back, the registrar of the court filed a complaint on behalf of the court, said assistant police inspector Bharat Jadhav.
Initially, for some weeks, the police were unable to locate Sheikh,a resident of Nehrunagar. They finally arrested him on Wednesday. Mali was arrested on the premises of the court.
Sheikh is an employee of a dairy products firm while Mali earns a living posing as a guarantor to people who arrive at the court to seek bail. He earns a commission. He did the same for Sheikh when he applied for bail. We have arrested both for forgery. We have also booked him for harming the reputation of the tehsildar who claims that he does not even know Sheikh, said Jadhav.
