Man held for alleged murder in Chembur area

A 29-year-old working in the health sector was arrested by the Mumbai police for allegedly murdering his friend in Chembur area in the wee hours of Thursday.

The accused, Deepak Kharpe, was alleged to have stabbed his friend Bhimsen Bhalerao (35) when the latter speaking ill about the former’s wife. The duo had been consuming alcohol when the incident took place.

This angered Kharpe and the duo got into a fight. During the fight, Kharpe stabbed Bhalerao several times and then fled the spot. Locals saw Bhalerao’s body and took him to hospital where he was declared dead.

As per procedure, the hospital alerted the local Tilak Nagar police and based on the post mortem report, a murder case was registered.

The zonal DCP then formed six teams to investigate the murder. An officer said that they went through CCTV footage where Bhalerao’s body was found.

“Going through the CCTV footage we found that Bhalerao was consuming alcohol along with Kharpe. They are seen going to a wine shop to purchase more alcohol. A few moments later, Kharpe is seen fleeing the spot,” an officer said.

Based on local intelligence and the CCTV footage, the police managed to track down Kharpe on Thursday evening and he was placed under arrest.

An officer said that the duo knew each other as they were both born and raised in Tilak Nagar area. Bhalerao had recently moved to Navi Mumbai.

Bagul said that he will be produced before the court on Saturday to seek his custody in the murder case.
