A 30-year-old Malad resident died by suicide on Tuesday evening by jumping off the bow-string arch bridge connecting the coastal road and Bandra Worli Sea Link. While this is the first suicide from the newly opened coastal road, police officials stated that the person took the extreme step due to stress stemming from an ongoing dispute with his wife. The deceased has been identified as Darshit Sheth, an employee of a private company in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). “Sheth lived with his family in Malad. He had married a woman he loved nearly four months ago, and subsequently, relationship problems arose, causing him significant stress," a police officer said. According to the police, Sheth went to his BKC office as usual on Tuesday. After leaving his office, Sheth, according to police, called his mother in the evening and informed her that he would be returning home late because he was going to south Mumbai for some work. He drove his car to south Mumbai via the Bandra Worli Sea Link and the coastal road. At approximately 7.30 pm, he took a U-turn, parked his vehicle on the north bound lane of the recently inaugurated bow-string arch bridge and jumped off. A security guard who witnessed the incident alerted the Worli police and fire brigade. “His body was initially visible in the sea, but it disappeared due to the low tide. His remains were recovered around 7 am on Wednesday, and an accidental death report was filed at the police station," said an officer from the Worli police station. The police identified Sheth through documents found in his car and informed his family. “We have learned that a dispute between Sheth and his wife caused him stress, which allegedly led to his suicide," an officer said.
