POWAI police on Sunday arrested the supervisor of the construction site where seven-year-old Shyamsunder Bind was found murdered two days ago.

POWAI police on Sunday arrested the supervisor of the construction site where seven-year-old Shyamsunder Bind was found murdered two days ago. Police said the accused was trying to get close to the victim’s mother and killed him to prevent him from informing his father.

Shyamsunder, whose father Raj is a watchman at the construction site, was found dead on the second floor of the under-construction building on Friday. He was missing since early evening. The post-mortem report had indicated death due to strangulation as well as a head injury.

Police identified the accused as Shamsuddin Ansari (31),a supervisor at the construction site. “Ansari stayed on the same premises as the victim and his family and used to visit the Binds’ house when Shyamsunder’s father was out. He had tried to get close to Shyamsunder’s mother several times and the boy had threatened to tell his father,” said senior inspector Bajirao Bhosale.

On Friday,Shyamsunder and Ansari crossed paths while running separate errands and Shyamsunder again threatened to expose Ansari. He hit Shyamsunder on the head with a wooden plank and when he fell down motionless,Ansari took him to the second floor. He tied a rope around Shyamsunder’s neck and held it tight for several minutes, after which he tried to arrange the body to indicate suicide but abandoned the plan and fled.

Police said Shyamsunder’s mother gave a statement about Ansari’s obscene behaviour as well as Shyamsunder’s threats.
