MMRDA to get Rs 500 crore from Shivshahi Punarvasan for rental payments

THE MUMBAI Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to get Rs 500 crore from Shivshahi Punarvasan Prakalp Ltd (SSPL), which was also formed to carry out slum rehabilitation quickly, for rental payment of the proposed Ramabai Amebedkar Nagar redevelopment project at Ghatkopar.

An official from MMRDA said that Rs 500 crore has been collected by SSLPL over the years and now that money will be transferred for the smooth execution of the slum redevelopment project. The rent will be paid for three years. However, the decision on amount of rent to be paid to each household is yet to be decided. This is the first slum redevelopment project to be taken up by MMRDA.

The MMRDA in a joint venture with the slum rehabilitation authority is carrying the Ramabai Ambedkar redevelopment project for the proposed extension of Eastern Freeway up to Thane which currently starts from PD Mello Road in South Mumbai and terminates at Chedda Nagar in Ghatkopar.

The SRA’s role will be to conduct the survey work, prepare annexure of eligible tennats, and vacate the site. MMRDA will take care of the rehabilitation process through the construction of redeveloped buildings as well as build the Eastern Freeway’s extension up to Thane. The freeway extension project will cost Rs 3,200 crore approximately.
