Multi-modal project planned, but ROB over Thane railway station remains incomplete

The ROB, a crucial link in the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS)-E, was initially set for completion in August 2024 but has faced delays due to monsoon and the challenges of working near live railway tracks.

As a part of the overall SATIS-E initiative, Thane Municipal Corporation is constructing a 2.24km circular elevated road linking the Eastern Expressway to the east of Thane railway station. While the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), in collaboration with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), has unveiled an ambitious multi-modal project for Thane railway station, the railway overbridge still stands incomplete. The bridge stands out as it passes from above the railway track, being a connector between east and west of Thane.

The ROB, a crucial link in the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS)-E, was initially set for completion in August 2024 but has faced delays due to monsoon and the challenges of working near live railway tracks. The December 2024 deadline has also been missed, as confirmed by Sandeep Malvi, Additional Commissioner of TMC and CEO of Thane Smart City.

“We have obtained all the necessary railway clearances that were previously pending. The only step remaining is an 18-hour mega block, which the rail department has assured will be allocated soon,” said Malvi.

He projected the bridge’s completion by March and, in case of operational delays, confirmed it would be finished before the RLDA tower. “If conditions permit, we aim to start commuter operations on the bridge, even if vehicular movement is not immediately possible,” added Malvi.

Without the ROB, the multi-modal hub cannot fully achieve its purpose. The SATIS-E project aims to transform Thane railway station into a seamless transit hub by integrating various modes of transport and creating vertical leasable airspace. A centerpiece of the project is the construction of Tower-1, an 11-storey building near platform 10A, spanning 9,000 square metres.

Tower-1 is designed to address multiple needs. Its basement will serve as a parking facility, while the ground and mezzanine levels will cater to railway operations. The concourse level is intended for bus movement, ensuring smooth integration with other transport modes. Above this, eight floors will be dedicated to commercial use, with a built-up area of 24,280 square metres.

As a part of the overall SATIS-E initiative, Thane Municipal Corporation is constructing a 2.24km circular elevated road linking the Eastern Expressway to the east of Thane railway station. This road will provide direct access to the deck area near platform 10, making it easier for commuters and businesses to navigate the hub.

The integration of transport systems and commercial development relies heavily on the timely completion of this ROB.
