A second public hearing for the proposed Peddar Road flyover is likely to take place in mid-March. MSRDC officials had submitted revised plans for the Peddar Road Flyover to the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) recently. The plan proposes a viaduct entirely over the road, with a sharp curve at Girgaum Chowpatty and then along the Chowpatty seaface without any portion of the flyover disturbing the beach.

The Environment Ministry has asked the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to conduct a public hearing on the likely environmental impact of the proposed flyover.

“We had already conducted a public hearing in the past, however, the ministry has informed us that we need to conduct another public hearing as plan for the flyover has changed. We will conduct the hearing in mid-March,” said a senior government official.

According to reports,Peddar Road residents had met MoEF earlier this year calling for a public hearing on the flyover. Singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosale, who live in the locality, had also opposed the flyover when it was first proposed by the government. The sisters have since withdrawn their opposition.

The state has time and again stressed that the 4.2-km flyover would address traffic woes while the Worli-Haji Ali Sea Link was being built, however, the fate of the Worli-Haji Ali link now hangs in balance as Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has asked MSRDC to look for alternative solutions for the sea link.

Senior MSRDC officials are scheduled to meet MoEF officials this week to resolve the concerns arising out of new CRZ notifications released in January regarding road projects.
