The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations (BMC) effort to speed up the road work in the city by levying heavy fines on errant road contractors is not yielding the desired results,it seems. While the civic administration has slapped a fine of Rs 47.50 lakh in one month on road contractors, construction of roads in the city is yet to pick up.
Officials said the contractors have dug a portion of road and installed chowki for namesake, but have not actively started the work at most places. According to statistics provided by the BMCs road department,in eastern suburbs, work on seven out of nine road has begun, while in western suburbs, work on all the 14 roads has begun. In the island city, out of 13 roads, work on 11 has started.
The BMC had levied the fine during November. While a total fine of Rs 35.28 lakh has been imposed on Relcon Infrastructure,KR Construction and Valecha Engineering, who are responsible for road works in western suburbs,Rs 2.95 lakh was slapped on Mahavir Infrastructure and Shantinath Roadways and RK Madhani infrastructure in western suburbs. In the island city,a fine of Rs 9.34 lakh was levied on Prakash Engineering,Bitcon India and Vitrag Construction.
The major road projects worth Rs 549 crore, which had been awarded to a consortium of nine contractors, has been delayed since October due to a variety of reasons, including delayed traffic nod, bhoomipujan demands by various corporators and extended holiday period owing to festive season.
According to a senior civic official,Although the work has started,it is moving at a slow pace. At most places, they have not even laid the foundation. To avoid any further delay,we are levying fines on contractors.
