Teachers of degree colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University (MU) have alleged that two weeks after the colleges reopened, the varsity has failed to send them an official notification on the modified syllabus for 2013-14. The modified syllabus is yet to be uploaded on the varsity website, they said.
MU pro-vice chancellor Dr Naresh Chandra said,The university has started uploading the syllabus and most of it has been uploaded. If there are a few subjects for which the syllabus has not been announced,it will be done soon. The colleges will be notified soon.
Teachers claimed that modified syllabus for subjects such as literature, political science and economics from all the three faculties of arts, science and commerce are yet to be notified. The syllabus is modified every two years. The syllabus of subjects in the first and second year were modified last year according to the credit-based semester system pattern and the syllabus for the third year was to be modified this year. The modifications are notified by the varsity through a letter.
Teachers said classes for the third year courses had begun. However,we have neither received any letter from the authorities nor has the varsity uploaded the syllabus on the website, said a political science teacher at a suburban college.
A teacher of Marathi literature at a college in western suburbs said,Teachers of many subjects are left clueless about what to be taught and what to be omitted from the syllabus. In our case, the board of studies chairman of Marathi had emailed the details of modification. In the absence of official notification from the varsity,we still manage to conduct lectures. Since two weeks have passed, teachers are left with no choice but to start teaching last years syllabus.
A teacher from Bombay University and College Teachers Union said changes were to be made in many subjects. The modifications are to be made by the Board of Studies following which it would be taken up in the academic council and the review committee meetings. It is then placed before the management council for final approval. All this takes time and so there could be a delay, said the teacher.
