Now,MMRDA in talks with a mosque trust

After a temple, the city’s development authority is now negotiating with a mosque in Andheri to use a portion of its premises and cut a part of the parapet on a temporary basis for the construction of the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro corridor.

The trustees of the mosque are not outrightly opposed to the proposal of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) but they have sought more clarity on the authority’s plans. “We had a meeting last month with MMRDA officials and told them to give us a complete plan of what will have to be demolished and how it will be done so that we can put it in front of our community and put it to vote.” said Umar Chauhan,a member of the trust. “A month has passed but they haven’t got back. They haven’t even been in touch with us during this time.”

Chauhan said the construction of the Metro corridor had started in 2008,but this was the first time in the past four years that the trust was informed that a portion of the mosque’s premises would be required for construction.

A senior MMRDA official said official negotiations did not start earlier as the mosque was not part of the right of way required for the Metro corridor. Right of way refers to complete ownership of land along the entire alignment of the route.

“We had several meetings with them. A miniscule part of the parapet will go on a temporary basis and that too we are trying to avoid demolitions as much as possible,” said SVR Srinivas, additional metropolitan commissioner at the MMRDA.

A part of the mosque’s parapet will need to be demolished so that Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd,which is in charge of the construction, can install pier caps on a stretch near Andheri station towards S V Road. The Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium will reconstruct the dismantled part after construction while the construction on this stretch is scheduled to start after two months.

Meanwhile,a part of the Maheshwar temple in Asalfa — required for the construction of a Metro station — still remains to be demolished despite two years of negotiations and a government notification for land acquisition.
