Over 60% illegal banners pulled down in nine days

According to the civic body’s license department, around 7,131 banners were removed after the model code of conduct was imposed on March 5.

Over 60 per cent of illegal banners, posters and hoardings put up across Mumbai since the beginning of the year have been removed in the last nine days by the BMC.

According to the civic body’s license department, around 7,131 banners were removed after the model code of conduct was imposed on March 5.

The BMC had set a March 13 deadline for these to be removed from public view. “Almost all the illegal hoardings and banners have been removed from across the city. The work is complete, though there may be a few sites where these illegal advertisements continue to remain. These will be removed in a day or two,” said Sharad Bande, superintendent of the license department.

While political leaders in the BMC have failed to finalise a policy to regulate the proliferation of such illegal advertisements, from March 14, the corporation will enforce a complete ban on them as per the rules of the election code of conduct.

“We have our usual policy of prosecuting under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act for defacement. If political hoardings persist, we will write to the chief electoral office, informing them of the violation of the code of conduct,” Bande said.
