Pipeline burst disrupts water supply to Byculla,Central

Bellasis Road,Anandrao Nair Marg,Meghraj Shetty Marg,Dr Bhadamkar Marg,Mumbai Central Railway Station,Grant Road Railway Station,Slater Road and R S Nimkar Road were affected.

The 600-mm-diameter pipeline was laid six years ago as part of a project to boost water supply in the areas.

“Most pipelines that have burst are more than 30 years old,but this one cracked because there was great increase in pressure. This could have been caused due to an error by junior engineers operating valves. It will take us about 48 hours to fix the leak,” said an official.

Water gushed out of a rupture measuring 2X2.5 feet. Supply was stopped by late Friday evening for repairs.

There will be no cut while the repairs are on,but most parts of Byculla and Mumbai Central will receive water at a very low pressure on Saturday and Sunday. At the same time,BMC will undertake repairs to a 750-mm-diameter pipeline at Mahim near Western Express Highway on Wednesday from 10 am to noon.

There will be no water supply in areas of Perry Road,Sheryl Rajan Road,Manual Gonsalves Road,Chimbai Road,St.Paul’s Road,Carter Road,Chappel Road,Mounty Mary Road,Union Park Road and parts of Khar West.
