Driver Ralpha Alkush Nazareth (45) was killed after being hit by a tempo on Western Express Highway in Borivali (East) late on Saturday night. Nazareth was replacing a flat tyre of his Toyota Qualis when the accident occurred.
The tempo driver is absconding. Kasturba Marg police said Nazareth had parked his Qualis near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park bridge. Around 11.50 pm,a tempo hit him, said senior inspector Bharat Worlikar.
Police said the tempo driver abandoned his vehicle and fled.
Nazareth was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital in a police van,where he was declared dead on arrival.Police are questioning local residents to find witnesses. We have contacted the tempo owner and have asked him for name and address of the driver, said Worlikar.
Coast Guard battles fire off Mumbai coast
A major fire broke out on a merchant vessel off the Mumbai coast on Sunday evening,with Coast Guard battling to bring it under control till late into the night. Coast Guard officials said the crew on board was unharmed.A fire has broken out on MV Amsterdam Bridge off the Mumbai shore. Coast Guard ships Samudra Prahari and Subhadra Kumari Chauhan are engaged in fire-fighting. Two other vessels are also being set, said a Coast Guard officer. Sources said the fire appeared to have broken out in the vessels engine room Our prime concern is to put out the fire. There were around 20 persons on board the merchant vessel and all of them are sae, said the officer.
