Ram Gopal Varma had filed an appeal before the sessions court against a magistrate court’s order in January which convicted and sentenced him to three months simple imprisonment. A sessions court in Mumbai on Tuesday issued a non-bailable warrant against director Ram Gopal Varma for not appearing before it in connection with a cheque bounce case.
Varma had filed an appeal before the sessions court against a magistrate court’s order in January which convicted and sentenced him to three months simple imprisonment. Varma, through his lawyer, sought an exemption from appearance, which was permitted.
The lawyer also filed for bail and a stay on Varma’s conviction. The court rejected these pleas stating that Varma can file the applications by remaining present before it. The court issued the non-bailable warrant and directed for a report to be submitted on July 28.
Varma can appear before the court and file a plea to cancel the warrant.
In January, a magistrate court in Andheri had found Varma guilty under the Negotiable Instruments Act. The case was on a complaint filed by a company named Shree that claimed that tax invoices of Rs 2.38 lakh were raised to be paid by Varma’s firm for supply of hard disks in 2018. Two cheques issued by the firm in June and August 2018, however, were allegedly dishonoured due to insufficient funds.
