STATE BOARD schools in the city that have not been taking in students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act will have to grant them admission by June 27 or face derecognition, the education department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said.
“We have written to the schools that if they don’t abide by the notice by Monday, we will prepare a list with their names and ask the state government to derecognise them,” said Prakash Charhate, deputy education officer.
According to an official from the education department, the BMC heard the case of about six schools on three major issues on Thursday — schools denying admission to RTE students, schools charging fee for uniforms, books and notebooks and schools charging tuition fee from RTE students.

“The schools were denying admissions on several grounds. One school had declared the number of RTE seats for Class I without taking into account those RTE students to be promoted to the class this year. Another had refused admission to a student because of a technical error in the application,” said the official.
The official said a Santacruz school that had been granted minority status this year was charging fee from RTE students admitted last year.
