The report of a survey held by Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on birds within the park was released on Friday. The survey reveals that several species of birds that visit the park are “completely missing”, indicating that their number is on the decline due to major threats to the environment. The survey, carried out all through 2014, provides information on various bird species which have been listed as ‘red-listed’ or ‘endemic species’.

“Some key species of water birds which were listed earlier are missing. Their numbers are dwindling all over their distribution range across the world. Some duck species, specifically, may have disappeared, but the cause can be found only through continuous monitoring,” the report said.

The survey recorded detailed information of 194 species. “A large number of resident birds or birds with restricted local movement have been recorded, which suggests that the health of a habitat is of utmost importance and any degradation will be readily reflected and will affect the communities,” the report said.

The survey focused on birds of prey and water birds which are primarily carnivorous but whose numbers have not usually been high. “A total of 132 resident and 45 winter visitor birds were recorded. Of the 194 species, 41 species were found to be abundant, 67 common, four rare and two occasional,” the survey said.
