(Photo: X/@MurjiPatel_)Murji Patel, a former corporator and BJP member, recently jumped parties to contest the Maharashtra Assembly elections from the Andheri East constituency on a Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) ticket. The Indian Express speaks to Patel regarding his recent transition from the BJP to Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena Party and his plans for the constituency.
Q. Your recent switch from the BJP to Shiv Sena has raised eyebrows. What were the main reasons behind this change?
Murji Patel: The party made the decision, and it is everything for me. As a Mahayuti candidate, I am confident that with everyone’s support, we will win. We aim to bring change to Andheri East.
Q. As a candidate representing Mahayuti, what primary issues do you plan to address for Andheri East? Can you indicate specific policies or development projects aimed at improving the sector?
Murji Patel: I will focus on solving major water issues in Andheri East, and I am determined to establish a Mumbai municipal corporation hospital in the area. Additionally, I plan to help the youth secure jobs in local IT companies.
Q. Andheri East has seen rapid urbanisation, but infrastructure, traffic congestion, and housing concerns remain. If elected, what immediate steps would you take to address these challenges?
Murji Patel: My initial step will be to open the D P Road from Andheri to alleviate traffic congestion. I will ensure all roads are made of cement concrete to address the pothole problem.
Q. You have represented the BJP as a party member for many years. How do you plan to balance your relationship with BJP ideals? How would you respond to the doubts among Shiv Sena loyalists about your candidature?
Murji Patel: We are already united as a grand alliance in Andheri East. We make decisions collectively with party leaders. In the Mahayuti, we have historically led in elections, including a 10,000-vote lead in Andheri. Our success comes from the hard work of Mahayuti activists, and I believe we will again come together to elect a Mahayuti MLA in the Andheri East seat.
